For first-time installation, see Quickstart.

Requirements

  • On macOS and Linux, use the Bash command line.
  • PowerShell support is in beta. Windows users can also work in WSL with the Linux command.
  • Use a terminal such as Kitty, Ghostty, iTerm2, or Windows Terminal. Image display and some key combinations depend on the terminal.
  • Installing and updating requires access to the release service. Model requests require access to your provider.

Choose a version and directory

Use step update <version> to move to a specific release. To use a custom executable directory or the installer, download the installer on macOS or Linux before passing installation options:
Use latest for the latest release, or replace it with an available release version. --install-dir selects the executable directory. The installer also accepts these environment variables: For configuration, credentials, and session storage, see Data paths.

Update Step Code

step upgrade is an alias. To install a specific release, use the command format step update <version>. Check the result with step --version. Release notes describe the changes in each version.

Uninstall Step Code

  1. Exit Step Code and back up configuration and sessions you want to keep.
  2. Remove step from the installation directory, or step.exe on Windows.
  3. Remove the installation directory from your shell configuration or Windows PATH. The installer uses a marked PATH block for zsh, Bash, and POSIX login configuration; fish uses fish_add_path.
Credentials, configuration, and sessions remain after removing the executable. Follow the data cleanup instructions to remove them separately. Leave directories shared with other tools intact.
